San Saba County is located smack dab in the center of Texas between Killeen and San Angelo. San Saba County was founded before the civil war. Early inhabitants were several different Indian tribes. The Spanish arrived in the 1730s and white settlers arrived in the late 1820s. By the 1860s the population was close to a thousand, and over 10% were slaves. By 1870, due to horticultural advances, San Saba was called the Pecan Capital of the world. After the Civil War by the late 1880s, mob violence instigated by the Ku Klux Klan brought about a wave of terror with lynchings and other forms of murder, often racially motivated. By the end of the century, the Texas Rangers were brought in to finally put a stop to the violence.
