Swisher County is located in the Texas Panhandle on I-27 between Lubbock and Amarillo. The Comanche Indians occupied the area from 1700 till the 1870s when the US Army drove them out. By the 1880s buffalo had been depleted and large cattle ranches had taken over the county. In 1906 the railroad came through and by 1910 the county was connected to Lubbock by rail.
