What is Houston’s Tow and Go Service?
What is Houston's Tow and Go Service?
The Houston-Galveston Area Council wants to remind road users that a totally free, life saving, and traffic reducing service is available. Tow and Go is an awesome social service that Houston drivers can benefit from in an emergency.
What is Tow and Go?
Houston’s Tow and Go program is a service that allows broken down vehicles to receive free towing assistance on some eligible freeways. This service comes at no cost to the motorist and applies to menachical failures such as overheating, dead batteries, and flat tires.
How Does it Work?
If your car has broken down, call 713-881-3333 to reach Tow and Go to let them know your location. It is recommended that you keep your seatbelt on and hazards blinking until your rescue arrives. They will take you no more than one mile to a safe place.
The program is designed to make the traffic flow seamless even in the case of a breakdown or stall. It is safest to get to the shoulder but even cars on the shoulder can cause rubbernecking that slows down traffic. With Tow and Go, an operator arrives to quickly and safely remove a stalled vehicle.
What Area Does it Serve?
The Tow and Go service does not apply to just any freeway. At this time, only those that are camera monitored will be eligible. However, Harris county does have plans to expand the program further. Click here to find out if your area is covered.
How Much Does it Cost?
The program is funded by the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway administration so that it comes at no cost to drivers that break down in service areas. Safe Clear was Tow and Go program's predecessor and featured fees to the driver. While these fees were low in comparison to independent towing companies, Houstonians are excited to receive the service for no fee at all.
What Services Are Provided?
In the cases of flat tires, the contracted Tow and Go wrecker will repair the flat as long you have sufficient equipment. They will also take it to a storage lot for free and store the vehicle to 48 hours. After 48 hours, charges for the storage will apply.
What If I Have AAA?
Even if you have your own towing service, Tow and Go would like to speedily get you and your car to a safe place. Then, from the safe location, you can get the broken down car towed from there.
If you already called your service, let them know the new location you’re being towed to by Tow and Go. It will be far safer to meet your car club service there. Because this city service only tows within the mile to get you to safety, it cannot take you to an auto shop or your home.
Tow and Go Exceptions
The service is provided simply to move traffic along on freeways. It does not apply to residential streets or service roads and not all freeway areas are monitored by the cameras. Abandoned vehicles will be charged city fees and be financially responsible for their own towing. This is also true for cars involved in wrecks or police scenes. It does not apply to cars stalled due to high water.
This new program is a step in the direction of making Houston a safer city. As the service area continues to expand, we can expect less congestion and damages caused by stalled driver incidents.
In the unfortunate case of a stall, keep this courtesy option in mind. Make your community aware of this clearance option because it could save a life. For more information visit www.towandgo.com
