Q: Do I need to get the PTDE Packet before starting my Parent Taught Drivers Ed course?

According to state regulations, students must order and receive the PTDE packet before starting any Parent Taught Drivers Ed coursework online. You can order the PTDE packet from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) here . The DPS will not recognize any coursework a student does before receiving the PTDE packet from the TDLR.

Q: How do I complete the required Parent Taught Drivers Ed behind-the-wheel driving hours?

The required behind-the-wheel driving hours can be completed after the student receives his/her permit at the DPS. The student along with the student’s official parent instructor must complete 14 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The student along with any licensed adult 21 years old or older must complete 30 hours of behind-the-wheel practice.

Q: What happens if I don't have an eligible parent instructor?

If a student does not have an eligible parent, he/she cannot take Parent Taught Drivers Ed, but please be aware, this can be your legal parent or guardian, including step-parent, grandparent, or foster parent.

Q: What happens if I fail a level assessment?

Level assessments must be passed by a score of 70. If you fail a level assessment you can take the level assessment again (no additional charge) an unlimited number of times until you pass.

Do I need to get the PTDE Packet before starting my Parent Taught Drivers Ed course?

Does this course include the state-approved DPS written test?

Yes. At the end of the first six hours (module one), the student will answer 30 state-approved DPS written test questions that are multiple-choice. The student must pass the written test with at least a 70 as the grade. Completing and passing this exam means the student will not be required to take the Written Knowledge Test at the DPS office. If the student does not pass, he/she can retake the test again 24 hours later. There is no additional fee to take the written test again

How do I complete the required Parent Taught Drivers Ed behind-the-wheel driving hours?

Who can be an instructor for this course?

The checklist to be an instructor for this course is as follows:

Must possess for the preceding 3 years a valid TX driver license
No conviction or probated sentence of a DWI for last 7 years
No conviction or probated sentence of criminally negligent homicide
You are the parent or legal guardian of the student including step-parent, grandparent, or foster parent
Driving privileges suspended, revoked, or forfeited for traffic-related violations in the last 3 years
No more than 6 or more points on your driver license

Driving record from the state or country where the parent last had a license may be needed if the parent has not possessed a valid TX driver license for 3 years
